Strauss programmed this polka for the Austrian Empress's name-day in 1842. Name-day celebrations at court always meant a carnival for the inhabitants of Vienna in those days. Strauss sr. directed the music for the court balls, namely in the Volksgarten. At its première, this Anna Polka was encored four times. Only one week after the feast, the published edition of the piano reduction already appeared. Interesting detail: its the publisher who adds 'Popular' (Beliebte) to the title, which was a brilliant move crowned with success: not only would this piece become an enduring crowd-pleaser, it also launched the Polka as the new dance sensation.
